Underground Clean-up Map
This map shows four types of wells used to contain or remove unwanted underground chemicals at the former Terminal:
Groundwater extraction wells keep underground water containing unwanted chemicals from flowing beyond the old Terminal. They work by removing underground water faster than the flow of underground water can replace it. Some of these wells are equipped with “LNAPL Recovery Skimmers” that remove “light non-aqueous phase liquids” -- petroleum products that float on the surface of underground water.
Monitoring wells allow BP to check the results of its strategies for cleaning up and containing unwanted underground chemicals.
Soil vapor extraction (SVE) wells remove unwanted chemicals found in vapor form.
An Air Sparging (AS) well puts compressed air into the underground water-saturated zone. As a result, unwanted chemicals bubble up through the water and rise into an unsaturated zone where a soil vapor extraction system can remove them.

Groundwater Contour Map
This map shows the locations of the many types of wells used in remediation and monitoring efforts at the BP Paulsboro Terminal. It also shows the various remediation systems and the areas they address, as well as pertinent site features and areas where tanks were formerly located. When you click on an area of interest, the legend will be displayed to aid in reading the map.
