From its beginnings as an oil company more than 100 years ago, BP has evolved into an international leader in the energy field. But BP goes beyond providing cleaner, more efficient sources of energy; today it is a company that is committed to making a positive contribution to the communities in which it operates.


In Paulsboro

Here in Paulsboro, BP has forged a partnership with the community to develop long-term options for the site so that the once industrial land can be put back into productive reuse. It has also made an effort to contribute to projects that can benefit residents in other ways. These include:

  • Donating a lighted sign to the Boys and Girls Club of Paulsboro and having it installed.
  • Providing the Boys and Girls Club with dumpsters for the demolition of its basement
  • Providing funding for a contest arranged around the release of the film Jersey Girl
  • Sponsoring the Greater Paulsboro Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament in 2002, which benefited a scholarship fund at the Boys and Girls Club and Paulsboro High School.
  • Donating $17,000 worth of equipment to the Billingsport Fire Department.
  • Sponsoring an interactive lesson on solar energy for fifth and sixth graders from Loudenslager School as part of an Earth Day celebration.

Around the World

Internationally, BP responds to both immediate needs and long-term development. Some of its projects include:

  • Supporting a boy's home in Angola for children who are homeless because of the civil war
  • Providing training and employment opportunities in Australia for people who were previously involved in criminal or antisocial behavior
  • Helping build a road in Colombia
  • Working with Habitat for Humanity to help build houses in South Africa
  • Contributing to the creation of a nature trail in Texas City, Texas
  • Assistance in rebuilding community resources in Gujarat, India following a devastating earthquake
  • Raising awareness of environmental issues by creating a new curriculum for primary and secondary grades in China
  • Donating millions of dollars to assist in the rescue and recovery effort for September 11
  • Providing major funding for research on environmental and energy issues at universities in the U.S.
