What's Happening

September 2007

The future Port of Paulsboro got a jump start in September when Gloucester County approved a $2.675 million bond to fund the initial engineering, environmental and other preliminary work that needs to be completed before construction of the $180 million port can begin.

BP also met with the Port’s project engineer in September to discuss the coordination of site cleanup and port construction, which will take place at the same time. Further meetings are planned as the project moves forward.

February 2006

Officials gathering in Paulsboro Feb. 1 formally signed agreements creating a future Port of Paulsboro.

Borough, county and state officials joined representatives from BP and the South Jersey Port Corporation for the signing. The Port will sit on land that BP leased to the Borough for $1 per year for 90 years, beginning in 2005.

The state will bond the $150 to $185 million needed to create the port. The facility is expected to be operational in three to five years and to generate $100 million annually in revenue and taxes.

December 2005

The South Jersey Port Corporation passed a resolution to ensure that the planned Port of Paulsboro will be clean and financially beneficial to its neighbors. The December 6 resolution strictly regulates the scrap industry to prevent sight, sound and air pollution. It also specifies the corporation's payments to municipalities with which it enters or renews agreements.

November 2005

The Gloucester County Improvement Authority authorized an agreement with the county to help finance and build an overpass from Interstate 295 to the planned Paulsboro Marine Terminal.

The November 14 agreement provides bond financing, with the state paying all of the debt over six years, according to the Courier-Post. The $16 million overpass will lead trucks and vans straight to the port, avoiding residential areas. Construction is expected to take three to four years.
